Understanding Epidemiology
Terms in epidemiology
In epidemiology, there are terms called epidemics, endemic, pandemic, and epidemic. All of this relates to serious illnesses. The following are explanations of the epidemiological terminology:
Outbreak
The plague is the occurrence of a disease in society, where the number of people infected is more than usual, in certain communities or in certain seasons.
This plague can happen continuously, ranging in a matter of days to years. Not only in one region, but it can also extend to other regions or countries.
People often assume that in the event of infectious diseases, it means an outbreak has occurred. In fact, not always so. The disease is said to plague when the disease:
1. There has been a long time never to plague the community,
2. Come a new disease previously unknown,
3. The disease is the first disease that has been infected by the people in the area.
Epidemic
Epidemic is a condition similar to plague. Circumstances are said to be epidemic if a community or region is exposed to infectious diseases and the occurrence occurs rapidly.
One example of an epidemic was in 2003 when SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) disease occurred around the world and swallowed victims of hundreds of souls.
Pandemic
Pandemic is an outbreak of disease that occurs widely throughout the world. In other words, this disease has become a problem with the citizens of the world.
Examples of pandemic are HIV/AIDS. Not only so, the influenza that now seems mild is once a disease that goes into the category of pandemic and becomes a problem of world-level disease.
Of Endemics
It is the state or characteristic of certain areas or environments that have to do with disease. Obstetrician and Gynecologists, Cardiologist.
For example, a certain area is a place known as an environment where people are easily infected with certain diseases.
This disease is always present in the area but the frequency is low. In Indonesia, for example, there are areas that are endemic to malaria.
